Executive Director Job Summary
The Executive Director reports to the Children’s Center’s Board of Directors and is responsible for providing vision and effective management of The Children's Center in alignment with the organization's mission and the Board’s guidance.
The Executive Director oversees all programs and services, ensures sustainable funding, effectively stewards grants and resources, develops strategic plans, equitably hires and manages staff, and represents the agency in the community. In managing a wide range of responsibilities and systems, the Executive Director must show terrific judgment, an inclusive orientation, and the ability to navigate complex requirements and competing priorities and deadlines.
Currently, the organizational structure has seven direct reports to the Executive Director, including: Early Childhood Education Director, Early Intervention Manager, Community Relations Coordinator, Health Director, Head Start Director, Rehabilitation Manager, and Operations Director. Developing and advocating for the most effective and appropriate organizational structure is of great importance for the next leader.
The next Executive Director of the Children’s Center must have a strong orientation to building relationships with varied stakeholders within and outside of the organization. Stakeholders include the board, staff, parents and caregivers, children, elected and appointed officials, representatives of state and federal agencies, private funders, representatives of non-profit organizations, professional colleagues, and broader general community members.
It is essential that the Executive Director is empathetic and treats people with respect and appreciation regardless of their circumstances.

The anticipated hiring range for this Executive Director is in the low 100’s. Additionally, the Children's Center offers comprehensive benefits including generous paid holidays, vacation days, 401k plan participation, and comprehensive insurance benefits.
This role is expected to be primarily on-site and in-person. Working remotely from home is not a feasible option outside of special and occasional circumstances.
Position Requirements
The Executive Director of The Children’s Center must have a commitment to early childhood education and the mission of the organization.
Successful candidates will have experience navigating complex systems and be empathetic and willing to learn and grow with the organization while working closely with the Board of Directors and colleagues.
The Children’s Center welcomes candidates with at least five years of related experience and the following qualifications and abilities:
- Exceptional 360-degree relationship-building skills, fostering positive connections with the community, staff, and families.
- Experience managing, developing, promoting, and retaining various teams.
- Experience with budget development, management principles, strong problem-solving, prioritization, and planning skills.Understanding of relevant federal and state laws, center policies, and department procedures including public administration principles and practices.
- An orientation to connect with the unique Western Tidewater community and with preference given to candidates with experience in the community.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
